Fight for every point

Trust Jin Wei to fight for every point at home to clear early rounds

PETALING JAYA: As long as there is a glimmer of hope, you can bet that women’s singles shuttler Goh Jin Wei will give it her all.

The year hasn’t been going the way Jin Wei would have wanted as she has had first-round exits in all her tournaments this year, except entering the second round of the Malaysian Open in January.

However, the country’s only representative in the women’s singles department for the Paris Olympics remains optimistic that her time to shine will come, and is hoping glimpses of it will show during the Malaysian Masters beginning tomorrow at the Axiata Arena.

“I feel that I still have the hope to win, I just have to keep fighting for it,” said the world No. 32.

“I know the results haven’t favoured me in recent tournaments, but that’s life, and not everything will be in your favour.

“That is something that sports has taught me, I just have to keep fighting until that day comes.”

The 24-year-old has been doing her fair share of fighting off-court as well, as she struggles to cope with competing at a high level after undergoing colectomy surgery in 2019.

Jin Wei added that support from her fellow compatriots has been a driving factor for her to keep pushing herself, especially the likes of Lee Zii Jia, Soh Wooi Yik, and Lai Pei Jing.

“They have all been going through their own sets of challenges and situations, and we share a lot with each other.

“Everyone has their own path and getting their support is always something that I can look forward to.

Jin Wei will need to wait for the qualification round to be over for her to know who she faces in the opening round tomorrow but is eager to show her stuff as it will be good preparation for Paris if she can make it far in the Super 500 tournament this week.

“Most of the players who are heading to Paris will also be competing here, so it’s a good platform for all of us to prepare for the Olympics,” she said.
